Update. Friday 27th June

Saw the specialist today who wants to do another scan on me to check if the cancer has spread. This is a PET scan and can only be done in Hull or Leeds as York does not have the necessary equipment.

It is a radio nuclear scan where some dye is injected into a vein and then the blood glows a different colour in any "dodgy" parts and shows if the cancer has spread. Once the surgeon has these reults he can decide which parts of me he is going to cut away.

The scan will be sometime during the next 10 days.

Tony, a man whom I have had the pleasure of meeting and am proud to call a friend. There is absolutely no better advice than all have given about remaining upbeat and positive and be sure that I am well qualified to empathise in this fact !

When you next assail your sawbones, do be sure to enquire about the modern (and sometimes still experimental) investigations/procedures that may be available and do not readily take no for an answer... my experience in this has turned my medicos right around from expressing very little interest in me as a person who simply exhibits nothing more than a series of 'aches and pains' into a diligently fascinated and helpful phalanx most interested in studying the unusual case of atypical 'Scheuermann's Disease' that has just been suggested as a diagnosis.

In your case, there could be succour from personalised T-lymphocyte harvest/multiplication/retransfusion technologies, maybe some legs with liquid Nitrogen ablation therapy &/or (maybe wrong name here) microwave interferometry - in which microwaves are directed at tumour sites from lots of different angles, but only get 'hot enough' to kill cells where they are all simultaneously focused... all being somewhat less invasive treatments than is otherwise being considered here.

Hope that you can make some headway with these (and other) bright ideas...

tony good luck my brother in-law has just left hostpital after having atumer removed from his ossosphigus he is really well and fells better than any time inlast twelve months hope every thnig goes as well for you and your family

I have been a regular visitor to your site for sometime now. It is without doubt the best publicity non-league football could ask for. I sincerely hope you win your personal battle and continue to make this the site that all true non-league supporters visit; especially when they're on holiday and what an update !

Hi Tony

Been a member of your website for a long time now and met at the Yorkshire Main match a few seasons ago, when you came down with your lad to the CMFL Bonanza match there. We didnt have too much time to chat but it was good meeting you. I have fought Hodgkins twice and I know that you have a positive attutde and that will pull you through. I used to be involved in developing PET scans. It is the best technology available for detecting small cancers. Basically they inject you with a small amount of a radioactive sugar. As many cancers use glucose a source of energy the radioactivity acccumulates more in the cancer than normal tissue-hence you can see it with the scanner. The radioactivity is very short lived-110 minutes and so has decayed away in a few hours and does not cause any harm.
Although the technique has only been available routinely in the UK for the last 4-5 years it has been around for 20 years and many million patients have been successfully diagnosed with it.
